“I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress, my God on Him I lean and rely, and in Him I confidently trust!”
And we have finally made it to verse 2.
We’ve chosen to move into the secret place of the Most High, we are abiding in Christ, and living by faith. Part of living “by faith” means we not only believe in our heart what God’s Word says, we also confess it; we speak it. Confess simply means to agree. We agree with God. We agree with what His Word says, and we speak it or declare it. Verse 2 says, “I will say of the Lord….” We say something about the Lord….What do we say? We say, “He is our refuge.”
God’s promises are activated in our lives by faith-filled words. After all, we are to copy our Father and that is exactly what He did in Genesis when He created the Universe…”God said…and it was so”!
We can receive what God has provided for us through Jesus Christ by doing what Mark 11:23 instructs us to do: “Whoever shall say…and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he says shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he says.” Its the same way we got saved. (see Romans 10:8-10)
There are many scriptures that tell us about the power of our words. I try not to become “sloppy” with the words I speak knowing that my words have power to create or destroy. My words can be used for God or against His purposes. My words can be used for me or against me. Jesus says we’re accountable for every idle, careless, “non producing” word we speak—yikes! (see Matthew 12:36-37). We’re to use our mouths for him. In order that I don’t take off on this subject, even though I’d really love to, here’s the first blog I ever wrote (if you want to read it) which will explain why I am big on saying what God says: https://bloggerbuck.wordpress.com/2011/01/
Here in verse 2, the word Say means: to mediate on something and then to reveal it by speaking it out or declaring it. We use our voice.
It’s sort of like this…let’s say you bought a raffle ticket for, oh I don’t know, let’s just say a brand new house on the water in the fabulous Florida Keys ;), and it turned out to be the winning number! In order to receive your house, you have to turn in that ticket and confirm you’re the winner. As wonderful as that would be (for me), God’s Word is even better. The Bible is full of winning tickets just waiting for us to claim. We simply have to spend time letting the Holy Spirit bring revelation, meditate on it, believe it, and then confirm it as ours by SAYING…”Hey, this is mine! Jesus provided this for ME and I’m here to SAY, It’s MINE!”
Notice the word “say” carries the idea of “meditating on something” first before speaking it. Meditating means we “mutter it to ourselves over and over” until it becomes real on the inside of us. Then we declare it because we believe it and the power is released in those faith-filled words.
Psalm 91 verse 2 tells us exactly what we are to say to confirm our protection. We’re to “say” this about the Lord—“He is my refuge and my fortress. He is my God and on Him I will lean and rely and in Him I confidently trust.”
There is power in our words and the power of God is released when we give voice to His Word in faith.
The Lord—Jehovah–…He is the always existing one—the one who always was, always is, always will be. The name of the one true God.
Refuge…my shelter from rain, storm, falsehood or danger of any kind, my place of safety, my defense.
Fortress…my bulwark, my stronghold, my fort, my strong place, my protection, the top and peak of a mountain, my mountain castle (emphasis is mine ’cause I liked the visual this gave me…highest mountain with the most amazing castle on it. Yeah, I’ll live there).
So, mediate on this truth from God and ask the Spirit of God to make it real in your heart. Then speak it with confidence….
“The Lord is my refuge and my fortress.”
I think I’ll go ahead and make it more personal… “You, Lord, Jehovah, the only one true God are my Defender and Protector. You are my shelter from the storm and any kind of danger or evil. You are my stronghold, my castle on the top of the highest mountain. Like a fort, You are my place of safety and protection.”
And that just put a smile on our Father’s face!
To be continued…..until then….peace to you and your family.
